PBS Newshour has a great clip with Dale Chihuly showing off his studio and discussing how famous artists move into team artwork. So I hosted a Chihuly inspired makerspace party after school for an hour. Even with below zero temperatures, I had a few brave souls willing to color and melt plastic bottles to resemble his work. A 2 liter bottle will cut into 1/3 sections, colorful Sharpie markers stay transparent after melting, and are easy for every age level. These photos are from Pinterest, I lost sleep over how to set up candles for kids to use. I opted for short 4oz Ball jars with a votive candle. The glass top kept fingers and projects from getting too close to the flame. HINT: Melting from the opposite side may help bend into the desired shapes.
