Cardboard Free Play

Dana Carmichael

In October I invited all students to the makerspace to construct something from corrugated cardboard. I've outfitted a cart with tape, small cardboard pieces, box rivets, corrugated cardboard knives (not as dangerous as it sounds), and scavenged boxes. I showed students a cllip of Caine's Arcade and turned them loose (previous post). This group decided to dive into some recently donated balsa wood, styrofoam packaging, and plastic scraps to build two miniature skateboard parks and a mock up of a border wall. They have been addicted to the hot glue guns and modeling sponges dyed green (for bushes and trees). Most heartening is the sharing of supplies and "cheats" between two disparate social groups.
