Cardboard Games Challenge

Dana Carmichael

This really should be "clean out the recycling" challenge. With bottle caps, foam sheets, cardboard, beads, and baubles, students formed teams to design unique games. A few boys used all the papertowel rolls for pseudo sling-shot style "gaming" but other teams paid homage to books, sports, and movies like Harry Potter. This game caught my attention because they made a spinner out of a brad and paperclip. They manipulated various generations of parts over three recesses to get it working. Many teams put some geometry to work spacing and designing their boards, but the intricate stories they made up for their themes were fantastic. I loved the 8th grade group who made their playing pieces out of foam peanuts to resemble llamas. Be prepared to host several game days after construction.
