Taking apart any electronic is an easy introduction to Maker culture. This was a VHS player that hadn't been checked out in several years. I started by cutting off the power cord (don't want anyone getting a jolt). I only had a handful of tools, but everyone seemed eager to see the inside. I love the fact that when they were through, They though about turning th cover into a paper tray. After reading a bit more about the inside of these things, I have since made a habit of borrowing safety goggles. Students are also encouraged to wash their hands immediately after taking electronics down to their component parts.
