This is my favorite gift-giving project. Instead of plastic drinking glasses, I saved every yogurt and fruit cup my family used for a year! The small plastic drinking glasses make the center candle holder. Students had the option to use pop bottle lids if they want taper candle holders. Thrift store beads embellish the tops of most of them. Hot glue will fix any that fall out when I turn them out of the cups. Students traveled through individual stations for students to write a name on a bowl, wipe a thin layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the inside of the base bowl, and then get 3/4 C of wet Quickcrete. I had students put on gloves because cement is so drying. It also helped them tamp down the cement around the edges after the small cup is inserted into the center. After 10-15 minutes drying time, pull out the interior cup. If it is too wet, the interior cup will not release. After 90 minutes, most bowls are ready to be flipped out onto newspaper, but it can wait overnight. Return the bowl to the cement to prevent drying too quickly and to keep students' names with their work.
