Painting rocks

M.C.

Coming into the gift-giving season, I was looking for projects that would be accessible to anyone. A treasure trove of Google images around "rock painting" exists, and I knew this project could accommodate a large number of students and be economical. I printed color copies of these images in graphic designs, Animal and people likenesses, and even a set called "story rocks" as inspiration. Our local ACE Hardware, Nelson's, advertised a sale on sample paint cans. I went in looking to buy six primary colors and a bag of cheap foam brushes. As I was picking out the colors to mix, I explained our project to the employees. They graciously gave me ten sample paint cans that other people had requested and rejected. Many of the donated colors were in the beige and maroon family, but beggars can't be choosers! PTA volunteers signed up to help with preparing tables with multiple layers of newspaper. An average of 20 students showed up for each of eight recesses. Our volunteers kept water glasses and brushes refreshed, and helped teach students the dangers of polluting paint colors by double-dipping.
