Go-cart repair

Dana Carmichael

Following the success of a take-apart table, I wondered how to create opportunities for our students to put things together. Our custodian, Mr. Whitright, thought repairing small appliances would be a useful skill, and he volunteered to come to our class after his workday if I could find some things to fix. Conversation led to an electric go-cart hiding in the back of my garage and magic happened. Mr. Whitright supervised a small group of students researching scooter and diagnosing possible problems. We had brushes that needed replacing, and a battery that had become dangerous due to storage in extreme temperatures. As students took apart the motor housing more parts joined the list and students created two repair quotes. My favorite moment is the students' discussion and realization that the more expensive quote is more than the cost of a new cart. Thanks to the generosity of Principal Branstetter, we ordered the parts and students spent two weeks with Mr. Whitright repairing and rebuilding the go-cart. What a fun fall day when we were able to reap the reward of our efforts.
